A guide to antenna options with our products


Many wireless products feature the ability to attach an external antenna to improve wireless performance. Most customers choose to use an antenna for:

  • Improving range
  • Improving antenna positioning

The purpose of this guide is to make customers aware of their antenna options, advise them of some trade-offs when using an antenna and to relate this information to the LM product line-up.

Improved wireless range/performance is often desirable and, antennas are a quick and cost-effective means to accomplish this. Every 6dBi of antenna gain will approximately double the effective transmission distance, however, it’s important to realise that antennas are not power amplifiers, they do not make a signal stronger, they instead improve range by focusing a wireless signal over a smaller effective area, as pictured below:
